Friends and family

Derbyshire Recovery Partnership understands how much another person’s substance use can affect those around them. The support we offer is designed to support the whole family or those closely affected, with the primary aim of encouraging the person with the drug or alcohol use problem into treatment (or to support them to stay in treatment).

Support we can offer you as a family member or carer:

One to one BACP counselling

Our seven-session programme aims to help family members develop improved awareness, understanding and communication skills in order to encourage their loved one into treatment. Once in treatment the family will have an opportunity to work together with the person using drugs and/or alcohol to improve knowledge and communication between all parties to help maintain recovery.

If the person using the substance does not wish to enter treatment, we will then look at further counselling or alternative services for them to ensure they can continue to be supported.  Your counsellor will be able to suggest other services available in your local area.

Alongside Support

If everyone agrees and it is in the best interest of positive recovery, family and friends can occasionally attend keywork sessions alongside the person going through treatment. Although not always appropriate, this can enable everyone involved to be working to the same plan towards a common goal. This is not always the case and has to be agreed with the person in treatment and their key worker.

Addictions Training for Affected others

We provide basic drug, alcohol, gambling and addictions training for relatives and those affected by another’s addiction. We understand that if you learn more about substance use it will be easier to communicate more effectively with the person with the addiction and to make any decisions you may face. These training events also provide the opportunity to meet with other people who may be going through something similar and can therefore offer a supportive and understanding environment.

Speak to your key worker for further information.

Online CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family training) group

This small online group provides an opportunity for family members and carers of a person with an addiction to come together; to share some common, issues and concerns, feel supported and understood, learn how to better support the person with the addiction to enter treatment learn about addiction, positive communication, self-care and more.
